Las Reinas: Pieta
Endurance Performance

Artist: Wanda Raimundi-Ortiz

Costume Designer: Kristina Tollefson

DJ: Stereo 77

This boundary-breaking, interactive performance is a meditation on the abrupt truncation of young lives due to bias crimes and police brutality in America.  It serves as a vehicle for refuge, collective mourning and catharsis to communities of color and allies. The performance, where Raimundi-Ortiz cradles young people of color is inspired by Michelangelo’s Pieta.  The costume uses classical iconography to comment upon current social ills.  The headpiece is adorned with twisted and braided hair creating a crown of glory while the velvet robe elevates participants, enveloping them in richness and softness so their bodies can be soothed while embracing catharsis.
